Real close to turning 50? Tired of watching the “Bridge Run” and never running it? Think you have missed your opportunity to run in life? Think again!

I will start by telling you what running at 50 and over is not going to be. You will probably not win a race and you will more than likely not be running in the front with the 5 minute milers. You may not be able to have the energy you had at 20, and you may not be able to run everyday, and do tons of mileage in a week.

So why run? Because the reasons to run over 50 outnumber these facts considerably.

There is no aerobic exercise that will burn more calories in less time than running. The cost of running is minimal. A good pair of running shoes and you are ready to hit the road. Still not convinced that running is for you?

How about these statistics? In medical studies completed, it was proven that runners are less likely to die premature and have a lower risk of conditions such as heart disease, cancer, and other long term health conditions. It was further proven that this statistic was true not only for long time runners but also for those who had started a running program later in life. While all these statistics may bore you, how about one simple statistic? Runners, both long term and novice, have shown to have a better quality of life just by being healthier. It is that simple!

But what about injuries? Do runners have more joint injuries than non-runners? Studies conducted have shown that there are actually more knee and hip replacements done on non-runners than on runners. The old myth of running causing osteoarthritis has also been disclaimed. In fact, exercise on a regular basis can strengthen bones and reduce inflammation.

What does this all mean? Does it mean that you should immediately put on your running shoes and go out and pound the pavement without a plan? Starting a running program, or taking your current running program to the next level, requires a well thought out plan and self control to follow that plan. A program that will gradually increase your capabilities will allow you to accomplish your goals and decrease your risk of injury. Gradual increase of mileage, walk-runs, pace training, cross training, and a serious weight strengthening program will help you to enjoy the benefits that running can bring you.

Ok, so now you know all the advantages of running. But what about the most exciting part of all? The feeling of accomplishment you will get when you set your goals and reach them. That first time you cross the finish line of a race or the first time you finish your “long run” your sense of fulfillment will make it all clear to you. That is the reason you run after 50.

</rss:item></rdf:RDF>
